A Bradford curry house has been nominated to go up against the best in the business in a contest to find Britain’s top South Asian restaurant.

The city again has its chance to prove it is the curry capital in the third year of the Tiffin Cup, an annual curry competition organised by MPs from all parties to applaud the quality of South Asian food and raise money for charity.

Bradford has made it to the finals both years. Last year Shimla Spice staff showed their talents in the Westminster cook-off, as did The Aagrah the previous year.

This year The Rupali in Baildon has been nominated by Shipley MP Philip Davies to join 54 restaurants in the competition heats. They will be whittled down to ten finalists next week, ahead of a cook-off at Bellamy’s restaurant at the House of Commons on Wednesday, July 9.

The finalists will be looking to impress the judges; celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott, Editor of Tandoori Magazine, Mr Humayun Hussain, Rajesh Rao, the Head Chef at Washington Mayfair Hotel in London and Sanjay Anand, the owner of Madhu’s, in Southall, London. The winner will walk away with a specially made Tilda Tiffin trophy.

This year the competition is in aid of two charities: Friends in Village Development Bang-ladesh, which aims to contribute towards the education of disadvantaged people in rural Bangladesh, and breast cancer charity ROKO Cancer.

Keith Vaz, MP and Co-Chair of the Tiffin Club, said: “We are looking forward to sampling the best Indian food.”
