I had to admire their fortitude in keeping recalcitrant drivers out of the bus lanes, but the community constables standing in the pouring rain in the middle of the road in Shipley in the dark and gloom of a January evening rush hour seemed to me to be putting themselves in a bit of danger.
Their high visibility jackets didn’t exactly stand out in the deep gloom, especially for drivers peering through rain-lashed and probably misty windscreens, concentration perhaps not at its best in the scurry home after a day at work.
Perhaps they were relying on their agility to hop out of the way if their uplifted hands failed to stop or divert the lane hogs creeping through on the bus lanes.
Couldn’t they have been given those illuminated sticks that European traffic operatives use, plus a high-pitched whistle, to make them really stand out?
Health and safety gurus would surely agree.
Cos they were also in danger of being mown down by intrepid cyclists whose heads would be tilted against the driving rain, and not really expecting to find a half-visible person blocking the way instead of the usual queue of cars.
