A BUSINESS leader has expressed his disappointment about Marks & Spencer leaving The Broadway in Bradford.

The retailer confirmed yesterday that its prominent store at the shopping centre will close for good on May 18.

Bosses said they are "continuing discussions with colleagues about what this decision means for them" - and affected staff will be offered alternative roles with the retailer "wherever possible".

The business said "shopping habits are changing" and it wanted to make sure "we have the right stores in the right place and with the right space".

Mark Cowgill, president of Bradford Chamber of Commerce, today reacted to the announcement

He said: "This is disappointing news for the Broadway Centre and for Bradford.

"As a key presence in the city, the decision to close is both surprising and disappointing, considering the company's commitment to growth in the local area.

"M&S must now deliver on their priority of protecting local jobs.

"With Bradford City of Culture 2025 next year, plus other investment projects happening across the city, this is an exciting time to operate in Bradford.

"We hope that the space left by the closure of M&S will be optimised by another business who can capitalise on this opportunity."
