RESIDENTS have expressed their sadness after Marks & Spencer officially revealed its store in Bradford city centre will close for good next month.

The retail giant yesterday confirmed to the Telegraph & Argus that its prominent shop at The Broadway will shut on May 18.

Bosses said they are "continuing discussions with colleagues about what this decision means for them" - and affected staff will be offered alternative roles with the retailer "wherever possible".

The business said "shopping habits are changing" and it wanted to make sure "we have the right stores in the right place and with the right space".

The Marks & Spencer has been in The Broadway shopping centre since it opened in 2015.

Readers have been getting in touch with the Telegraph & Argus via Facebook to share their views on the news.

Neil Bussey said: "A very sad day for Bradford shopping."

Deborah Redman Mellon said: "In my lifetime M&S has always been there. Bradford without M&S - heart has gone out of Bradford."

Nick Slack said: "It's a big loss for The Broadway and Bradford city centre."

Alan Duggan said: "Another nail in Bradford's coffin."

Julie Elaine Platt said: "I wish they would reconsider. I love shopping at M&S - it's often the only reason I go to Bradford. I'm feeling very sad."

Paula Thornham said: "Really sad to hear this - the only reason I went into The Broadway to shop."

Charlie Middlemiss said: "I was in there the other week and it was packed - this decision just doesn't make sense."

Josie Beaumont said: "I go to work twice a week and whenever I pass or go in M&S it's always busy, particularly in the food hall and cafe. It's a lifeline for older people who get the bus in to Bradford and buy their meals for one."

Emma Barczay said: "Such a shame. The food hall is hugely popular. A lot of people are unable to travel to the other 'close by' stores."

Amanda Braithwaite said: "This is such a shame. I love this shop. The staff are all so lovely too."

Asif Farooqui said: "They are pulling out in towns and cities across England. It's not a reflection of Bradford as a location."

Ian Ward, general manager at The Broadway, said: "M&S closing its store at The Broadway is a loss for both the city centre and the wider Bradford district, and we are thinking of all those affected."
