UKRAINIAN football and the war is the subject of Saturday’s Sporting Lunchtime Lecture at the Record Cafe on North Parade, Bradford.

As the war in the Ukraine enters its second year, April’s sporting lunchtime lecture, at noon, is entitled ‘The Game Goes On’. It will be given by Peter Chymera, a member of the Uki Bantams group.

Organiser David Pendleton said: “Following the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, football was at the back of everyone’s mind. However following the strong resistance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the general population, football simply had to continue. The Game Goes On will focus on the impact of the invasion on the beautiful game, and how football offers hope and an international rallying point for Ukraine.

Peter will talk about how football in the country has adapted to wartime conditions, from the national team’s morale boosting efforts on the field to supporters groups on the frontline.

The Uki Bantams is a group of Ukrainian diaspora Bradford City fans - second, third and fourth generation Ukrainians, as well as those who’ve arrived here seeking sanctuary. The Uki Bantams go to games and are involved in community activities.

During the talk there will be a collection for the foundation Stands of Heroes supporting families of fallen football fans from Ukraine.

Often in dark times, sport can become a beacon of hope and as an act of defiance.”
