THE first British astronaut to enter space visited children at a Bradford primary school.

Sheffielder Helen Sharman, who went to space back in 1991, was at Iqra Academy on Drummond Road in Manningham, last Friday.

Pupils from Feversham Girls’ Academy and Bronte Girls’ Academy were also in attendance, to hear Ms Sharman share her insights and experiences of her time in space, as well as her journey to becoming an astronaut.

She championed the importance of science and how it can help the world work towards a better future.

She told the Telegraph & Argus: “Really, science is everywhere and it helps us live better lives.

“It’s so important that we all take an interest in science. For young people especially, STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects are going to be so much more important than they ever have been in their lives.

“So many more of their jobs are going to be based in STEM subjects.

“Of course, we all need to take an interest, whether or not we’ve got a STEM career.

“We need to take an interest in science because, with that, we can help to debate in public, and with that, we help to influence our leaders to make better decisions that will hopefully benefit everybody on this planet.”
