It is of course Valentine’s Day today - a day chosen by many to pop the question. This Bradford marriage proposal, back in 1996, wasn’t exactly subtle, but it was romantic nonetheless.
We like to think the happy couple are still together...
The most romantic day of the year began as a feast day honouring the martyr St Valentine. There are various accounts of his life; one being that he was imprisoned for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire in the third century. It is said that St Valentine performed weddings for Christian soldiers forbidden to marry.
In the 18th century, lovers gave each other flowers to celebrate St Valentine and in the 19th century, handmade cards were sent. Cards and flowers have remained popular with romantics, along with lavish declarations of love - as Wendy Marie discovered.
