DO ANY readers know what a ‘smoking concert’ is? Or a ‘Sheffie’?

Read on - the questions will be asked in due course. To get there, we are stepping down a sporting memory lane. Sent in by regular Telegraph & Argus nostalgia contributor Ray Banyard, this programme for a match at Bradford (Park Avenue) AFC is dated Saturday November 6, 1954.
The fixture is between Bradford and Workington, with kick-off at 2.45pm.
Bradford’s players were: Taylor, Suddards, Milburn, Brocklehurst, Hindle, Roberts, Miles, McLaren, Adey, Wright and Redfearn.
Workington fielded Newlands, Cushin, Vitty, Stokoe, Aitken, Dunlop, Mitchell, Bertolini, Dailey, Whittle and Jones.
At the time of the game, Bradford is sitting mid-table in the Third Division (North) with 15 points, just below Bradford City with 17.

Ray used to attend matches with his dad and uncle. “I’d be aged nine. I can’t remember the specific game, but we used to stand behind the goal at the Great Horton Road end. The leather ball used to get wet in bad weather and when it sailed over the goal we would all duck as it was so heavy.”
An advert above the team lists reads: ‘Read the report on this game and all the others in tomorrow’s News of the World. Other adverts include ‘Smoke Top-All Flake Half-Time, Full-time, All the Time - Metcalfe Bros (Tobacco) Ltd, Bradford, 1 Wholesale only,’ and
On a period when the austerity of the war would be fresh in people’s minds, it looks like Bradford folk were picking themselves up: there are numerous adverts for electrical, joinery, plumbing and decorating firms, suggesting a surge in home-renovations.
The programme contains a section on Club Gossip. ‘The Weather Clerk has been most inconsiderate to Park Avenue this season - we only recall one good day for a home game - and it was rough luck that we should have a rainy day for the visit of Accrington Stanley. The game had been looked forward to eagerly by those who remembered the previous season’s game and much added interest was created by the two Bradford signings a few days earlier. An attendance of approaching 14,000 on such a day suggested that with fine weather we might have had much nearer 20,000.’
According to the programme, forthcoming matches at Park Avenue include the Midland League against Goole Town on Saturday November 13, and the FA Cup first round on Saturday November 20.
Under ‘Supporters Club Notes’ readers are told that a small number of tickets for the England v Germany match on December 1 had been made available to members. The price is listed as 3/6.
‘Members can apply to the Secretary at the tea room or to his home address,’ it says.
The notes also draw attention to ‘the first smoking concert of the season’, to be held on Thursday November 18 at the Alexandra Hotel. ‘All members are cordially invited, when we are sure you will have a very entertaining evening.’
Can anyone throw any light on what such a night entails?
We would also like to know what a ‘Sheffie’ is. The word is used in an advert for what is described as ‘the original ‘Sheffield’ in bottle.’ It’s clearly a drink, as it was distributed by a Drighlington-based drinks manufacturer, but what is it?
