THIS wonderful, never before published photograph was taken by Fred Holden in Jan 1963, writes local author Terry Hanson, who supplied it.
The lady pictured is Fred’s wife Olive, who somehow has managed to get to the top of Clock Lane, Denholme, in light footwear. In the hollow, two chimneys tower over W&H Foster’s mill, which was to close somewhat suddenly the following year. On the distant horizon St Paul’s Church - named ‘The Minster in the Hills’ by the Bishop of Ripon when he caught a glimpse of the pristine stone in a beam of November sunshine as he travelled in his carriage to the church in 1846 - forms a magnificent landmark.
*Terry Hanson is author of ‘Denholme, the Village, the People and the Minster in the hills’. For more details about the book contact terrymhanson@hotmail.com
