OPERA producer Ellen Kent returns to the Alhambra this week with a triple bill performed by the Ukrainian Opera & Ballet Theatre.
The company will perform Puccini’s Madama Butterfly on Friday, January 26, Bizet’s Carmen on Saturday, January 27 and Verdi’s La Traviata on Sunday, January 28. The spectacular sets include a Japanese garden and antique wedding kimonos from Japan.
One of the world’s most popular operas, Madama Butterfly is the heartbreaking story of a young Japanese woman who falls in love with an American naval lieutenant, with devastating results.
Bizet’s masterpiece Carmen is about a gypsy girl whose beauty lures a soldier to desertion and leads to her own murder. The set reflects the architecture of Seville, including the main square, the bull ring and tobacco factory.
Based on a true story, La Traviata tells of the passionate loves and life of consumptive courtesan, Violetta. Highlights include the Brindisi, the best-known drinking song in opera.
“I’m delighted to be working with the Ukrainian Opera & Ballet Theatre Kyiv again,” said Ellen Kent. “I started working with Ukraine in 2000 and have continued these strong relationships ever since, working with the Odessa National Opera for which I was awarded The Golden Fortune Honorary Medal from the President of the Ukraine, as well as the Kharkiv National Opera and for the last couple of years with the brilliant Opera & Ballet Theatre Kyiv.”
