THE fire service has revealed the cause of a large fire that extensively damaged a scrapyard.

Stations from across the district battled a fire at Arthur Brotherton Ltd on Bradford Road, Ellar Ghyll, Otley, on Saturday night.

Dramatic pictures showed the scale of the large fire which saw a dozen fire crews and up to 30 firefighters battle the blaze.

Residents were asked to shut their doors and windows due to a 'smoke plume' caused by the fire.

There were crews in attendance from Otley Fire Station, as well as Leeds, Rawdon, Shipley, Cookridge, Fairweather Green, Keighley, Stanningley, and Hunslet.

A spokesperson for the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said on Tuesday: "Following further investigations, the cause of the fire is accidental with the most likely ignition source being a lithium-ion battery."

On Monday, melted tyres and burnt remnants of cars could be seen at the business.
