SECURITY has been ramped up at a sports centre that was broken into over the weekend.

Around 20 bicycles were stolen and windows and doors were smashed at Wyke Community Sports Village on Saturday night.

Extra security has had to be put in place at the multi-million-pound site - which only opened last November - until the damage is repaired.

Since the break-in, the white adult and children's Hoy bicycles have since been recovered.

The centre is home to local clubs including East Bradford Cycling Club, Shibden Cyclo-Cross, Wyke Wanderers AFC and Wyke Rugby Club, and is also open for public use.

The centrepiece of the sports village is its large cycle track that can be used by by the community and for major cycle events.

Mandy Parker, of East Bradford Cycling Club, said: "The adult and children bikes are owned by British Cycling and are used for community and disabled groups for free.

"It was a huge shock to the local community. We had to cancel our session that morning because police and CSI were there.

"The response has been amazing from the local community and the cycling community as a whole.

"They have done a huge amount of damage to the building, it is going to cost a lot of money to get it all repaired.

"Everyone who has got containers down there has had to replace their locks.

"It is just not what we need."

The sports village was one of the first major new developments to open following the pandemic.

Built on the former site of Wyke Manor School, the £6m Bradford Council-run facility features a full-sized floodlit 3G football pitch, three grass pitches and a pavilion with changing rooms and community space that can accommodate 250 people.

A Bradford Council spokesperson said: “Wyke Community Sports Village was broken into on Saturday night and approximately 20 bicycles, which had been kept on-site for a local cycling club to offer free lessons, were stolen from a container within the grounds.

"There has also been extensive damage to the interior of the main building, with windows and doors smashed and two key boxes stolen.

“Since the break-in, the police and local community have recovered all of the bikes.

“Extra security has had to be put in place on the site until the damage is repaired.”
