The club, founded in 1985, opens on Sundays from around 10.30am for three or four hours usually. With support from club members, new members of this sailing club could develop skills in rigging a sailboat and learning how to sail a course using wind power only. There are a variety of ages that attend, from as young as the age of eight to people in their eighties- a perfect activity that will entice all ages! Sailing is also ideally suited to people of all genders, so anyone and everyone could acquire expertise in sailing.

Wonderfully, the Denholme’s sailing club also sets up dedicated events and open days, of which the club also offers free taster sessions bookable through the website. Depending on circumstances, people could join individually or with a family membership which is £90 per annum. People could also sign up to a weekend ‘start sailing’ course, from which they will be as fortunate to achieve all the basics in order to sail a simple course. With time and experience, it is without a doubt, your ‘on water’ levels will increase rapidly. It is vital to know that you can never stop learning, and that sailing it limitless! To add to that, the Club participates in the ‘Discover Sailing’ initiative run by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA).

After being asked about the outlining benefits of sailing, Tony stated, “Learning to sail and developing sailing skills can build confidence and give a sense of achievement!”

The club is open to people who sail, but also to those who wish to bring their own paddle boards and kayaks to use at the club. For the uniform, people need to wear a wet or dry suit during the colder months, on which the member could choose about spending as little or as much for the specialized sailing kit. Buoyancy kits are another necessity, which could be borrowed from the Club, or bought from which the option will be left to those partaking in the Club.

Despite the club not being classified as competitive, individual members of the Denholme Sailing Club do compete in races at the club and elsewhere.

Delightfully, sailing also provides countless benefits, especially physically, some examples listed are muscles strength, cardiovascular health. Additionally, it helps with mental wellbeing, as studies have shown it to be helping significantly with reducing stress, improving concentration, spatial awareness, and visual acuity. Frequent involvement is shown to decrease anxiety levels by 15% and a life satisfaction value of 7.3 on the scale of 0-10. Sailing is an ideal way to spend time outdoors productively and disconnect from distractions with time away from your blaring screen for the stunning sky and the striking waters!
