Plans made for grouse shoots

Shooting on Ilkley Moor will only take place on a few days a year, says the head of a partnership set to bring grouse shooting back to Ilkley Moor.

Edward Broment, the leading figure of the Bingley Moor Partnership and recently appointed chairman of national body The Moorland Association, has outlined the partnership's plans for helping to manage the landscape and run commercial grouse shoots.

The Bingley Moor Partnership already manages Ilkley Moor's neighbouring Bingley and Burley moors and runs grouse shoots there.

Now Bradford Council, which owns Ilkley Moor, has announced that the Partnership's bid has won the right to run grouse shooting on the landmark moor for ten years.

The contract means the Partnership will provide practical help with restoring the heather moorland and give Ilkley Moor a gamekeeper.

Mr Bromet said it could be two years before shoots take place on the moor, because of the low grouse population. And even when habitats are improved and boasting a healthy population of the birds, there will only be shoots on a few days of the year, between August 12 and later October.

"A requirement of the lease is that we have a fully dedicated gamekeeper on Ilkley Moor," said Mr Bromet. "That gamekeeper will be carrying out all sorts of functions. Part of that is pest and predator management to improve the stocks of all ground nesting birds."

In answer to critics of shooting, Mr Bromet said holding shoots is the incentive for putting the cash and resources into the moor - without it, Bradford Council would have no help with maintaining the landscape.

Absolutely vile - man at his most ****!
I pity the poor foxes and other animals and birds that reside on the moor. Just wish I still lived close enough to do something to make it difficult for hobby shooters. I'd be only too happy to sab any attempts by those thug game keepers to torture animals that are only trying to survive like the rest of us. Anyone who thinks killing birds and aninals for fun is okay are sick, sick, sick!
If people want to snuff out life, they should join the army and see what it's like to be on the other end of a bullet or trap.
Bradford Council are corrupt in my view!!!!

Yet againg 1000's more birds will be slaughtered for this so called 'sport'. Why don't the shooting fraternity admit this is nothing more than a money making business instead of trying to con the public that they care about the moors.

The wildlife that is there at present will be persecuted by gamekeepers as they dont want their grouse being killed before they get a chance to blast them out of the sky.

Why do they not just give Bradford Council the money to keep the moor the way it is now?

Animal cruelty is everyone's business thats why 'some people don't mind their own business' and as for the ignorant and callous person who congratulates those who 'hold out aginst those animal rights people', I say, get a conscience. The'good management of the moor' which you so arrogantly state, will only mean wildlife will be killed by gamekeepers, just goes to show some people have no morals or ethics, just want a nice tidy landscape free from wildlife whose environment it is anyway. shame on those who condone this barbarity and to those who partake in the killing of innocent creatures, may you all reap what you sow!

'Cos they care more about a few birds than about people? When the experts tell us that this is the best way to maintain the moor as visitors expect to see it this going along with them is the right thing to do. There's very little cruelty involved here - grouse are, after all, prey birds. If people are bothered about cruelty to animals try getting something done about all the horses tied up on spare land, about battery chickens and about mass-production livestock farming. Hunting and shooting aren't remotely cruel compared to these activities.

As the game on the moorland is currently driven to existing shooting grounds nearby, very little (if any) game would be preserved by banning shooting on this particular piece of land. Those of us who live in the area and know the moor do know that its condition has deteriorated since shooting stopped (there are other factors, such as changes in practice by the water authorities).
Since the hunting ban came in, even more hunts are now active, and as i said, other local moors have shooting regularly, so all the saboteurs are not having a great deal of success, despite the threats, hassles, violence and publicity that they have drummed up.
And as for the remarks about morals and ethics, look at the tactics of some of your like minded colleagues.

Same old, same old from those condoning animal abuse. Using minority actions to tar the majority, claiming there is very little cruelty involved and mentioning other cruelty which we should be 'getting something done about'. How ignorant those who make such statements are. The many animal abuses that take place are being campaigned against along with this one, those who are violent in any group are not speaking nor representing me so don't suggest such Sigla. I am a peaceful, compassionate person who has never committed any crime, like the majority of those who campaign against cruelty of ANY kind. **** you consciences does it?? Perhaps you should try getting one, as for the hunt sabs not having much luck, again another show or ignorance, sore losers those who find fun in killing aren't you! As for threats and violence, records show just how many hunt supporter thugs have been involved in such, yes appalling isn't it but what can one expect from those who enjoy ripping wild animals to shreds?

Sigla?
"hunt support thugs" wouldnt exist if they didnt need to!
Why should others be able to come along and interfere in country practises that have gone on for centuries?
You dont get farmers and country people trying to alter your customs and habits.
You get on with your business and i will get on with mine.
Apart from that, we could shoot (as we already do) on private land, but this will help the council and local employment, and the council needs all the help it can get.

Have you noticed the fact that there are few if any cows in fields these days? This is because farmers are fined if their cattle produce too much milk and hence the young voracious feeders are kept in the barn 24/7 to feed on sileage. Now that's cruel - who gives a flying ---- about a few birds.

angel, Cheshire says...

As I said same old, same old excuses from those who condone animal cruelty, such as we cannot be 'country people' of course unless we agree with cruelty,
'why should we be able to interfere with country practices (nice little way to describe cruelty, country practices) same could be said of any cruelty be it to children, elderly or otherwise, it becomes my business when innocent creatures are abused.
'Would rather eat game thatn the products of a slughter house', guess what, you don't need to eat either, now there is a revolutionary idea eh! and let us not forget the violence and intimidation shown to hunt monitors which is above condoned as 'wouldn't exist if the didn't need to', those who condone such illegal acts are surely as bad as those who commit them. Yes we are are also aware of other cruel farming practices and campaign against those also and as for 'who gives a flying *** about a few birds', lots of decent, compassionate people do but what would the likes of those above know about that. I am happy in the knowledge that we all reap what we sow, it is called Karma. Whilst any form of animal abuse and cruelty exists there are those who will campaign against it and challenge it, so get used to it, we are here to stay, a large and growing number of people who do care a flying ***, animal abuse = my business, my fight.

We will continue our birthright and traditions, be they on our own property or council property, whatever you might say (you might be better understood if your writing was more legible).
The only debate remaining is will the council go ahead with the agreement? if they dont, then so be it, hunting in all its forms will continue in private.

"We will continue our birthright and traditions". I'm sure this is what your ancestors said about putting kids up chimmneys, badger baiting, bear baiting, dog fighting, slavery, women not being allowed to vote, the list goes on and on.

But now all these 'traditions' have stopped as will game shooting one day.

Its about time people owned up and said that they like killing aniamls for sport as it proves how macho they are.
