POLICE are reminding people to be mindful when contacting 999 after a series of bizarre calls over the festive period.
West Yorkshire Police has received some Christmas-themed ‘not 999’ calls over the holidays, and posted a message discouraging people from abusing the service.
Calls this year include someone simply asking if the police were ‘open’, while others have seen people ask if they can drop Christmas presents or Christmas dinner to a loved one in custody.
In a tweet, posted on Christmas Day, West Yorkshire Police said: “Please don't ring us and ask if we 'are open'.
“Neither can you ask to drop #Christmas Presents or Christmas dinner off to a loved one in custody.
“I am sure our lovely detention officers are looking after their clients.”

In another bizarre tale, another West Yorkshire caller asked police for help with their electricty - not long after being released for having a cannabis farm.
If you get home after been released from custody for having a cannabis farm and your electricity has been cut off, the police won't help you get it switched back on. Least it was 101 and not 999..... pic.twitter.com/7wXj7S1c7S
