Bradford City players are getting into their stride for the first charity road race in the city to help epilepsy sufferers, which takes place next weekend.

Up to 1,000 people are expected to take to the streets on Sunday, April 20, in the Epilepsy Action 10k Run.

The Yeadon-based organisation is a national charity and helped more than 730,000 people last year.

Anyone aged 15 and over can take part in the run, which starts and ends in Bradford's Centenary Square. It is a flat route and is ideal for both novices and elite runners.

The race, which is being organised by the charity in conjunction with Bradford Council and its B-active campaign, is also being supported by the Bradford Bulls and Airedale Athletics.

It starts at 9.30am and costs £15 for each entry or £13 if you are affiliated to a UK athletics club.

Bradford Council's assistant director for leisure services, Phil Barker, said: "Working in partnership with Epilepsy Action, Bradford City Football Club, Bradford Bulls and Airedale Athletics really boosts the profile of events like this and helps encourage people from more walks of life to get involved.

"As part of our B-active campaign, we are always looking to offer as many opportunities to residents of all ages and abilities to take part in physical activities, and hope as many as possible sign up and have fun taking part in the run."

Bradford City manager Stuart McCall said: "We are delighted to be supporting the first Epilepsy Action 10k in Bradford and are firm supporters of the B-active campaign and its efforts to provide opportunities such as this run for residents to enjoy.

"Supporting Epilepsy Action is a very worthy cause, so hopefully the event will attract good numbers and a lot of money can be raised in the process."

Melanie Taylor, of Epilepsy Action, said: "We're really pleased Bradford City is supporting this inaugural Epilepsy Action Bradford 10k run.

"We have received excellent support from all the major sporting clubs in Bradford for what promises to be a fantastic event, and I would urge as many residents as possible to submit their entry."

Bradford Council's B-active campaign was launched in 2003 and has been a huge success in encouraging people of all ages and abilities to be active, get healthy and have fun.
