Three men caught in possession of cocaine thought they had bought amphetamines, a court heard.

Craig Docherty, 21, Michael Smith, 20 and Lee Brayshay, 20, were stopped by police as they drove along Grassington Road in Skipton in the early hours of December 6.

Town magistrates heard today that a search of the car revealed a packet of white powder and two packets of a herbal substance.

Tests revealed that the powder was the class A drug cocaine and the herbal substance was cannabis, a class C drug.

All three men admitted being in possession of the drugs.

Smith had voluntarily chosen to address his problem by attending Craven Organisation for Drugs and Alcohol, said his lawyer Paul Fitzpatrick. He said Brayshay had decided against using drugs.

Doherty, who represented himself, also said he had learned his lesson.

Docherty, of Pinhaw Road, Skipton, was fined £200 and ordered to pay £43 costs and £15 victims surcharge. Smith, of Ermysted Street, Skipton, was fined £100 and ordered to pay £43 costs and £15 victims surcharge. Brayshay, of Montgomery Street, Skipton, was fined £120 and ordered to pay £43 costs and £15 victims surcharge.
