A drug dealer escaped jail after calling police to admit possession of around 17 grammes of heroin.

Yasar Mahmood, 20, of Athol Road, Heaton, telephoned detectives on December 4, 2006, to ask them to come to his home as he had a stash of the class A drug on the premises.

Prosecutor Ken Green told Bradford Crown Court today that Mahmood, who was of previous good character, had set himself up as a dealer during a four-week period before his arrest in a bid to save enough money to buy a car.

When police arrived at his address, Mahmood handed them two wraps of heroin before inviting them inside where he also retrieved a large bag of the drug from inside a vacuum hoover.

The court heard Mahmood had been found to suffer from Aspergers syndrome with autistic features.

A jury found Mahmood guilty of a single count of supplying class A drugs and a separate charge of possession of a class A drug.

Sentencing Mahmood, the Honorary Recorder of Bradford, Judge Stephen Gullick labelled his case "bizarre".

Taking into account his medical problems and previous good character Judge Gullick punished Mahmood with a jail term of 51 weeks suspended for two years to run concurrently for both offences.
