Elderly residents at a block of flats say their lives are being severely disrupted by anti-social behaviour in and around one of the flats in their complex.

People living at Welham Walk, off Otley Road, Bradford, say they feel intimidated by outbreaks of fighting and shouting over the last four months.

Bradford Community Housing Trust (BCHT) said it was looking into the situation after a number of people attending a residents meeting raised concerns about anti-social behaviour in Welham Walk.

BCHT said a housing officer would be visiting a property in Welham Walk in response to the comments.

A spokesman for the housing trust said: "BCHT is committed to working with residents to protect the rights of our law-abiding tenants to live in safe and peaceful neighbourhoods, which includes taking the appropriate tenancy enforcement action.

"In December, neighbours were issued with diary sheets to record any incidents of anti-social or nuisance behaviour in the neighbourhood which could then be acted on but to date none have been returned to the housing office."

The housing trust said reports of anti-social behaviour would be looked into immediately and encouraged all tenants to report issues to their local housing office or via the 24-hour reporting hotline on (01274) 254274.

Terry Patton, secretary of Otley Road Tenants and Residents Association, said residents at the complex, all of whom are elderly, were having to put up with the sound of fighting, shouting and arguing from the occupant and visitors in one of the flats.

He said some of the disturbances had continued into the early hours meaning residents had been unable to sleep.

Mr Patton said: "The old people are up in arms. They are talking about moving out and they just don't know what to do.

"There has been arguing, shouting, fighting in the landing and all sorts associated with drinking. One lady has moved.

"It's all old people in that complex and they find it frightening. One of them was almost in tears. We have complained to the housing trust, but they have just told the residents to fill out forms whenever something happens. It needs sorting."
