Police are warning women not to walk on their own after two muggings within days in Nab Wood, Bradford.

Detectives are investigating possible links between the frightening day-time attacks on two women in their 60s.

The latest incident happened at 3pm yesterday in Moorhead Terrace as the victim was walking to a friend's house.

The suspect approached her from behind, put an arm round her neck and dragged her to the ground.

He tried to pull her handbag from her shoulder but the plucky pensioner clung on, screamed for help and kicked out at him as she lay on the ground.

But the mugger punched her in the side of the face, causing minor injuries, and she let go. The suspect fled with the bag, which contained £45 and bank cards.

The victim was left distressed and upset by the incident.

The attacker is described as a thin white man, aged between 25 and 35, unshaven, 5ft 8ins tall, with short dark hair. He was wearing a black shiny jacket, dark trousers and possibly a woolly hat.

Detective Inspector Peter Craig, of Keighley CID, said: "This was a despicable attack and the lady was brave to put up a fight."

The earlier attack happened on Saturday at 1.30pm in New Close Road when a 68-year-old woman was also attacked from behind by a man. She was pulled to the ground as the robber snatched her bag. She was uninjured but badly shaken.

Det Insp Craig said: "We have had two similar day-time robberies on lone, vulnerable females in the same locality and we are investigating possible links between them.

"We urge females to be more vigilant and, where possible, make sure they are with another person."

Anyone with information about either offence is asked to contact Detective Constable Paul Harrison, of Keighley CID, on 0845 6060606, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
