The Bradford-based Renaissance Academy chess project is appealing for help to enable it to continue its work.

The academy, which was founded 12 months ago, is aimed at introducing children from varied backgrounds to the game of chess as a positive mental exercise. The academy visits deprived areas and involves disadvantaged children in the game.

The results have been startling and the group now has 4,500 young people from 8-24 years of age on its books. The academy has developed links with social services, young people's support groups, West Yorkshire Police, local schools and community groups.

But Renaissance Academy founder Charles Wood says further sponsorship is still required. "Sponsorship would allow us to get help for some of our chess coaches who currently do most of their work for the Grammar and independent schools," he said.

"We use chess to channel aggression into a positive direction, and an etiquette-based game has proved useful for all those involved. We can provide case studies to illustrate how working in partnership with other groups has had a dramatic effect."

The academy hosts regular tournaments at the Latvian Welfare Fund in Manningham.

Prizes at the next event on Sunday, January 13 will be presented by Bradford boxing champion Nadeem Siddique.

The Bradford Chess League is also keen to speak with anyone who wishes to become involved in the game locally.

Anyone interested in participating, whatever their experience, should contact Charles Wood on 07796 246 328 or Ihor Lewyk on 07779 871952.
