Drivers face more traffic chaos around already grid-locked villages as a main road is closed for repairs.

Plans by Bradford Council to close Cottingley Moor Road in Cottingley, Bingley, to Florida Road in Sandy Lane village for up to a week is likely to cause mayhem, according to ward Councillor Margaret Eaton (Con, Bingley Rural).

The road will be closed from 9am to at least 5pm from January 20 to January 25 and diversions will be put in place for motorists, including school bus drivers.

Coun Eaton said: "It is going to be a complete and utter nightmare for residents of Cottingley and for people who use the road up to Sandy Lane village.

"I really don't know what is going to happen, especially as traffic is also being diverted from Ireland Bridge in Bingley. People in places like Wilsden will have trouble getting to Cottingley. It will be absolute mayhem."

Coun Eaton is urging the Council to make a U-turn on its decision to carry out the work along the three-quarters of a mile stretch of road until a more convenient time. She said: "I will be contacting Bradford Council to see if it is possible to do the work when the roads are less busy.

"This is just about the worst time of the year to do something like this in an area permanently congested. I can't imaging how long the queues are going to be."

But, the Council's senior engineer for major maintenance, Andy Whelan, said the start of the work will go-ahead on January 20 and should be completed by January 25.

Work closest to Cottingley Village Primary School will be completed first, to allow parents access to the site.

But, the rest of the road will only be open to emergency services and road signs and barriers will be installed. Temporary traffic lights will be in place at the mini-roundabout on Bradford Old Road, where motorists will not be able to turn in to Cottingley Moor Road and travel up to Sandy Lane.

Parents will not be able to access Sandy Lane Primary School from Cottingley Moor Road after 9am and will be diverted via Haworth Road.

Drivers will also be diverted along Bingley Road. Suzanne Wahed, business manager at Sandy Lane Primary School, said: "Parents will need to set off earlier and should try to car share where possible or walk."

Mr Whelan said: "We have planned this as best we can but it is a busy road and we hope people will bear with us."

Bingley Rural Councillor Simon Cooke (Con) said adequate wearing signs were "paramount" during the closures to try to reduce congestion as much as possible.
