A day centre which has undergone a £500,000 refurbishment will be officially reopened next month.

The Pathway Day Services building - formerly Mirfield Day Centre - was built as an army drill hall which was taken over by Kirklees Council 35 years ago.

It now houses adult day services and is jointly managed by Kirklees Council and South West Yorkshire Mental Health NHS Trust.

The roof leaked and the heating did not work properly. The exterior was looking neglected and the main hall and furniture were shabby.

The refurbishment has seen a modern bistro café style dining area with new flooring and furniture where people visiting the centre will work alongside staff in producing the meals on the daily menu.

People who attend the day services helped to choose the new furniture and also organise the way in which they will help provide the meals.

During the refurbishment the original 1930s foundation stone was temporarily moved and then re-dedicated to acknowledge the changes to the building. A time capsule was found during the move and other items have now been added to reflect 2007.

The reopening takes place on February 14 at 1pm at the Nettleton Road building.
