Bradford Council will decide next week whether to officially oppose plans to close four post offices in Keighley and Ilkley.

Post Office bosses made the announcement in November that branches at Bradford Road, Stockbridge; East Morton; Highfield in Belgrave Road, Keighley; and Leeds Road in Ilkley were earmarked for closure.

And since then the Council has held two public meetings and sent a questionnaire to all the franchises in the constituency.

It also opened two public comment books in Keighley and Ilkley Town Halls and asked for an analysis to be carried out on what impact the closures would have on the local communities.

The consultation period ends on Thursday, January 17, and the Council's executive will be discussing the matter two days earlier.

They will have to consider whether to oppose all four closures, oppose the closures and ask for further time to discuss options, oppose some of the closures, or accept all of them.

The results of the Council's consultation is that people strongly support all four post offices being retained. And the survey of the public and the sub-postmasters shows that the closure of the post office at East Morton would result in the village losing its only retail outlet.

It would also be uneconomic for the shop at Leeds Road, Ilkley, to stay open if it lost its post office services.

Residents have raised some questions and suggestions that would require further discussions with the Post Office.

The closures are part of Post Office plans to close 2,500 sub post offices around the country. Consultation on possible closures in Bradford will begin in May.
