An apprentice at Otley's George Middlemiss & Son has been named Young Butcher of the Year.

Daniel Marston took the prize at the Butcher's Shop of the Year 2007 awards, held at a lavish ceremony at London's Claridge's hotel.

The judges said it was extremely difficult to choose the winner as all the entrants in the category were superb, but Mr Marston edged ahead as an excellent all-rounder with boundless enthusiasm for the trade and for his future within that trade.

The judges felt his obvious enjoyment of his job and willingness to experience all the business had to offer made Daniel a worthy winner.

Further praise came from George Middlemiss & Son, which described Daniel as the best apprentice they had ever had.

The Butcher's Shop of the Year Awards are run by Meat Trades Journal, whose editor Ed Bedington said: "Daniel's enthusiasm for the trade is quite breath-taking and I am sure he will go far. I wish him and all the young butcher finalists all the best for the future."
