A specialised industrial cleaning company is putting staff made redundant by the closure of the British Bakeries factory back into work.

SSL was formerly based at the moribund British Bakeries factory on Gain Lane and did all of the specialised cleaning work there.

After the factory announced in the summer it was to close, the company has relocated to new premises near the city centre on Garnett Street and is eyeing up new clients in and around Bradford.

To facilitate this work it has taken on five former members of staff from the bakery and hopes to gain enough contracts to take on more workers in the coming weeks and months.

SSL is still doing work at the factory after it was granted a stay of execution by bosses earlier this month and has been doing work at sites as diverse as Leeds City Station and Shipley Markets.

Sam Aldridge, of SSL, said: "Our work is not just any old cleaning work.

"It is industrial and commercial work which needs to be done by trained operatives.

"Large duct systems, used on the likes of restaurants, have to be cleaned out by law every six months. This is specialised work and is something we can offer."

The company is already working with restaurant chain Akbars and is looking for new contracts.

Gary Hammond, of SSL, said: "We know what these people are capable of and we want to try and offer their services to more firms."

SSL is a family business and had worked at the British Bakeries factory for more than 50 years.

In August, the Telegraph & Argus revealed up to 370 jobs at the factory were under threat as bosses announced the closure. It emerged British Bakeries, which makes bread for the likes of Hovis, was to shed jobs following a sharp fall in the bread market.

At the time, British Bakeries, which employed more than 500 people at the Bradford site, said it anticipated the site would be reorganised as a depot facility and production ceased in late October.

However earlier this month bosses said it would be granted a short-term reprieve with work resuming on a short term basis in mid-January. Anyone wishing to contact SSL can do so on (01274) 735777).
