A man who broke his wife's nose by kicking her in the face has been jailed for a year.

Bradford Crown Court heard that Farhana Ahmed had to undergo an operation to realign her nose after she was kicked by her husband, Waqar Ahmed, as she lay on the floor of their home.

Recorder Jonathon Rose was told the couple's marriage had deteriorated and Ahmed had petulantly kicked his wife during an argument after he had come back from working a night shift.

Bradford Crown Court heard that Ahmed had previously been cautioned for punching his wife and Recorder Rose told him: "There is never any justification, any excuse or indeed any mitigation for kicking any person as they lie on the floor.

"There is certainly nothing to be said for a man who kicks his wife while she is on the floor."

Recorder Rose described 25-year-old Ahmed as a violent, bullying, cowardly man and added: "If it was petulance that makes it in my view the more disgraceful."

Although Ahmed, of Hartington Terrace, Lidget Green, continues to financially support his wife and two children, Recorder Rose advised him to stay well away from her in the future.

Ahmed entered an early guilty plea to a charge of assault following the attack in March this year and his barrister Gerald Hendron told the court that his regretted kicking his wife.

"He lashed out and should not have done so," said Mr Hendron.

He pointed out that his client had not put his wife to the floor before he petulantly lashed out with his foot.
