JOYCE Brookes celebrated her 100th birthday today in fine style with a party for members of her family and friends and a visit from the Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Zafar Ali.
The centenarian achieved the landmark at Brookfield Care Home, Nab Wood Drive, Shipley, where she has been a resident for four years after moving to Yorkshire from Nottingham to live closer to her daughter Jane Lewis who lives in the town.
Mrs Brookes has three children in total, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She worked as a hairdresser and in a textile factory, working until the age of 70 having lost her husband 59 years ago in 1959.
Her daughter Jane put her mother’s long life down to her positive attitude and keeping active, particularly loving gardening, and the odd glass of lager!
She said her mother was delighted with the party complete with birthday cake and the Lord Mayor’s visit.
