THE Green Party has called on the Government to suspend rail fare increases for commuters on Northern until the company improves its performance.

Rail users are being warned to expect a 3.5 per cent fare increase next year - pushing up the annual cost of getting to work for long-distance travellers by more than £150.

Celia Hickson, Green Party's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Shipley, said: “Commuters across Bradford District have continued to draw the short straw when it comes to rail travel and this fare increase is yet another insult.

"For too long, our rail network is being run in the interest of the rail companies and their shareholders – not the commuters – and this has to stop.

"Over the last 20 years, the cost of motoring has continued to fall and the cost of rail travel has increased."

The Green Party has called for a “Rail Fare Revolution” where tickets fares are made more affordable.
