FIRE crews have managed to save three buildings after a large fire broke out at a private waste yard, just off Halifax Road.

The private yard, which was being used to collect household waste, was alight when a crew from Raistrick first arrived earlier this afternoon.

At its height, 50 firefighters tackled the blaze with six pumps and an aerial appliance.

Crews from Bradford, Cleckheaton, Halifax, Odsal and Dewsbury were at the scene.

One person was taken to hospital after suffering from the after-effects of trying to tackle the fire, a spokesperson from Raistrick Fire Station confirmed.

They added: "When we arrived, it looked like it could affect three neighbouring properties, but we managed to save them."

There was slight damage to the three properties - a commercial building, a private property, and a stable block - but the private yard was 100 per cent affected.

The spokesperson from Raistrick said: "Firefighters worked in difficult and arduous conditions - there was the heat of the day anyway and breathing apparatus had to be used for the smoke."

Livestock were saved from the stable, as well as crews preventing any damage to the interior of a business worth millions of pounds, the spokesperson said.

At the time, Halifax Road was closed due to the spread of smoke affecting the road.

Only four pumps are at the scene now and smoke is minimal.

The spokesperson from Raistrick said: "There's a large quantity of cumbustible items on the site, so some crews are attending through the evening to ensure it stays out into tomorrow."

Fire Investigation Officers will also visit the site this evening to try establish how the fire started.
