A busy supermarket is celebrating a multi-million pound store re-fit.

Morrisons in Mayo Avenue, Bradford, has been undergoing in-store changes since April this year as part of a £3 million development that has seen the introduction of several new services.

Workers had been coming in from 10pm until 6am to get the development completed as quick as possible, while minimising disruption to shoppers.

Staff and customers alike are delighted at the result now work has been completed.

Carmel Greene, the store’s Community Champion, said: “It’s brilliant, the store looks nice and it’s all been updated and modernised. We’re offering a lot more services.”

Such services include a new party shop section, as well as the expansion of the store’s clothing offering with women’s lines now available.

Ms. Greene said: “We’ve had a really good reaction. The party shop has brought about a big buzz particularly with Eid just happening.”

She added that the biggest challenge was for regulars trying to find products as the store was reorganised, but “greeters” were on hand to help people adapt to the changes and on the whole the development was well received. The changes aren’t just a positive for customers – staff areas have also seen improvements with the introduction of a new canteen and a lift.

Ms. Greene said: “It’s really good. You come downstairs and see this lovely new store. The staff are being looked after with the uplift too – it gives us a boost.”

Many of the staff at the Mayo Avenue supermarket are long-serving Morrisons members and have witnessed the store grow from humble beginnings at the other side of its current car park.

Denise Goodwin has given 41 years of service to Morrisons and was rewarded with the honour of cutting the ribbon. One of the biggest changes has been the introduction of a Halal butchers section and Ms Greene believes this shows the company is meeting the needs of the community and moving with the times.

Ms Greene said: “One of the biggest things we got told by customers was they weren’t able to buy everything in one go here. Our biggest priority is serving more people and making it easier for them. We want to show that everyone is welcome at Morrison’s and that we cater for all.”

Pupils from St Matthew’s C of E Primary and a customer clad in a Stormtrooper costume were also at the ribbon-cutting.
