A 20-YEAR-old Bradford man has been spared jail after being caught driving dangerously while on a provisional licence.

Landon Smith, of Hillam Street, Little Horton, was spotted by police officers driving a Toyota Yaris across the mini roundabout at the junction of Cooper Lane and Farfield Avenue in Shelf, shortly before midnight on March 30.

Prosecutor Stephen Wood told Bradford Crown Court that Smith was pursued by the officers for 2.1 miles, driving at speeds of up to 70mph in 30mph zones.

He was seen driving on the wrong side of the road towards Buttershaw and the pursuit ended with him losing control and hitting a garden wall.

When arrested, he told police he “panicked” as he had cannabis in his bag.

Ash Khullar, for Smith, said he had offered to give his cousin a lift home when he was spotted by police, and that he panicked and did something stupid. He said Smith was genuinely sorry.

Smith admitted driving dangerously, driving without insurance, driving otherwise in accordance with a licence, and possessing cannabis.

He was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 18 months, ordered to complete 30 days’ rehabilitation activity, and given a curfew for three months.

He was also disqualified from driving for two years and must sit an extended test.
