A KEIGHLEY man has won a national prize for the bar he built in his own home.

Sean Rutherford built the bar by hand in the attic of his Parkwood Street house and has stocked it with a huge array of drinks.

Sean, 30, who works in Bradford Council’s Revenues and Benefits department, has also equipped the bar with a pool table, a sofa and a home cinema.

Sean, who is unmarried, built the bar a year after moving into the house six years ago.

SGS Engineering launched the competition to find Britain’s Best Home Bar after research into Britain’s socialising habits found that almost 60 per cent of people said they would rather entertain at home.

The power tool and garage equipment retailer analysed Google search trend data and discovered that the average homeowner spent approximately £1,300 per year on socialising.

The analysis, coupled with sales data of relevant products, revealed that more and more people were investing in home bars to host parties with friends, with around 71,200 searches on average each month for phrases associated with having bars at home.

Sean said: “I bought my house about six years ago, and it had a really spacious attic that I knew I wanted to put a pool table in, then I decided to go the extra step and make it a proper bar.

“As I’d just bought my first home I couldn’t really afford to go out all the time, so it was nice to have a reason to get people to come to me!

“The bar itself was all made from various bits of wood and spare materials - we designed the shape around the corner of the room and built it up from scratch.

“The interior structure and shelving is all reclaimed timber, as I didn’t have much money at the time, and the top of the bar is made from an old wooden table that was left in my house when I bought it.

“The stained-glass window was also left in my house when I moved in - otherwise I would never have thought to put that in there.”

Sean said that whenever he had guests round to his house they all sat in the bar instead of the living room.

He added: “I have also put a projector above the bar that projects onto the wall - so it doubles as a home cinema with drinks on hand if I ever just fancy watching a film.”
