A COUPLE from Idle celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a surprise party at their care home.

Maurice and Irene Theabould, who live at the Newline Care Home in Greengates, were married on May 15, 1948, and to mark the occasion a party was held to celebrate their remarkable achievement on Sunday.

Maurice, who turned 92 on Sunday, and Irene, who turns 92 on May 25, met aged 16 at the Associated Weavers plant in Tong Street.

The couple lived in Eccleshill before moving to Idle, and now live at Newline Care Home where Maurice is receiving care for dementia.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Abid Hussain, paid the couple a visit on Sunday, and they were also joined by members of their family and friends at the party, which featured a singer and a buffet.

They have two children, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Samantha Ullah, one of their grandchildren, said the secret to the couple's long marriage was "always being there for each other".

She said: "My nan has had throat cancer and breast cancer and I think it's just being there for each other and strong for each other when it's needed.

"My grandfather has dementia now and is getting worse and now she is there for him, she moved into the care home so she could be there for him."
