Telegraph & Argus, Monday, January 5, 1981:
It was joy for the hunters of the Yorkshire Ripper after a Bradford lorry driver was due to appear in court charged with “a serious offence.” Police on anti-vice patrol in Sheffield city centre made the arrest of Peter Sutcliffe ending five years of Ripper terror throughout Yorkshire and Lancashire. Pictured on the front page of the Telegraph & Argus was a smiling George Oldfield, head of West Yorkshire CID. Mr. Oldfield’s health had suffered, but it was with obvious satisfaction that he announced the news that a man had been detained in Sheffield.
