AN on-the-run rapist who forced cocaine up a teenager’s nose and threatened to smash a bottle over her head before attacking her has been jailed for 12 years in his absence.

Imran Khaliq, 39, detained his 17 year-old victim, who cannot be named, for around seven hours at his Bradford home in January last year.

He was found guilty of two counts of rape following a re-trial at Bradford Crown Court that ended on February 23.

Khaliq, of Silverhill Drive, Bradford Moor, did not attend court on the day he was convicted and has been on the run since.

He was sentenced in his absence today, with prosecutor Sophie Drake telling the court: “The police believe he is out of jurisdiction, probably in Pakistan. He is certainly not here.”

During the trial, jurors were told how Khaliq had locked the girl in an attic bedroom at his house, seizing her in a headlock and telling her: “You know what I am going to do now,” before raping her repeatedly. As he forced cocaine up her nose he said: “This will make you horny.”

In a victim impact statement read to the court yesterday, the girl said she felt “disgusted” that Khaliq had taken her virginity.

She said: “I don’t like to go to sleep as when I close my eyes I can see him raping me. I hate him for what he has done to me. He has changed my life forever.”

Glenn Parsons, defending, said Khaliq was “clearly a very heavy user of Class A drugs” at the time of the offence.

He said he could offer no further personal mitigation as his client had not been in contact since absconding while on bail.

He told Judge Colin Burn: “Someday he will be back before the courts for the bail offence but that is his concern, rather than your honour’s today.”

Judge Burn, who had issued a warrant for Khaliq’s arrest in February, made the defendant the subject of an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

He described the rape of the girl as a “sustained, frightening, and intimidating incident”.

He said: “The defendant, having taken cocaine, indicated to the girl that he was going to have sex with her. There was a threat to break a bourbon bottle over her head. This underlying threat of violence pertained throughout.”

On the day that Khaliq failed to attend court, police said they were travelling to Lancashire in a bid to track him down, with the defendant said to have links to Greater Manchester.

In March, an image was released as part of an official appeal to trace his whereabouts.

Asked for an update on the investigation today, a police spokesman said: “It is important that he faces justice for this serious offence and enquiries to trace him are ongoing.”
