WORKING smoke alarms prevented a kitchen fire from spreading to a neighbouring property tonight.

Fire crews from Keighley and Bingley were called to a property in Grange Road, Riddlesden, at 6.45pm.

A spokesman for the fire service said the occupier had gone out of the property and left a chip pan on the hob which ignited.

"Luckily he had working smoke alarms which alerted his neighbour. When we got there, flames were coming out of the window," the spokesman said.

"We used two breathing apparatus and hose reels to put the fire out.

"We cannot express enough how important it is to have working alarms. If these had not been working the neighbour would not have been alerted as quickly and the fire could easily have spread to other properties.

"If you have alarms fitted, make sure they are tested regularly."

The spokesman said while they were there they fitted alarms to the neighbouring property.
