DRIVERS are being urged to take care on the roads as snow falls across the district.

Highways England has issued a severe weather alert and its gritting teams are working to treat roads. Bradford Council has said its gritting teams are also out this evening.

Drivers are being advised to avoid trans-Pennine roads, including the M62, junctions 21 to 25, and the M606 near Bradford.

A number of weather warnings are in place for the region.

Highways England’s Head of Road Safety, Richard Leonard, said: “Our gritter drivers will be out treating our roads around the clock but it is still important to drive to the conditions when snow is forecast.

“Make sure you keep your distance and reduce your speed if you need to travel because, even in conditions that seem normal and when the snow is not settling, it can be slippery if ice patches have formed, or where fresh salt has not been worked into the carriageway.

“Drivers should plan their journeys, monitor weather reports and pack a snow kit of blankets, food, water and a shovel if they really need to travel."

Treacherous road conditions are being reported across the district.

A two-vehicle crash was causing problems on the M62 earlier.

A Highways England spokesperson said vehicles have been moved to the hard shoulder, but delays remain.

West Yorkshire Police has urged drivers to take care and has warned people to only call with genuine emergencies.

Its Road Policing Unit tweeted: "Really difficult driving conditions across West Yorkshire, numerous collisions reported in all areas. Only drive if absolutely necessary."

First West Yorkshire has said all its servies have been suspended, with Arriva and the Keighley Bus Company also reporting problems.

The West Yorkshire Police Contact Centre warned the public not to dial 999 to request a lift home after receiving a call from a passenger whose bus had been cancelled.

There are also delays to flights, with some planes being diverted from Leeds Bradford Airport to Manchester and Newcastle.

A spokesperson said: "As a result of adverse weather conditions, Leeds Bradford Airport is presently experiencing delays.

"We recommend you contact your airline or tour operator and check the status of your flight before arriving at the airport."
