THESE pictures show dramatic scenes in Skipton after a car park area collapsed.

Firefighters are currently at the scene, off Bridge Street, which is close to the town centre.

The call came in at just after 3.30pm.

Martyn Hughes, Craven and Harrogate district support officer and joint Watch Manager at Skipton Fire Station, tweeted: "Well in 13 years of service this one must go down as a first.

"Crews from Skipton and Grassington on scene of a structural collapse in Skipton."

Stone retaining walls have collapsed scattering rubble into the beck which runs under the buildings, formerly Skipton fire station, before it flows towards Fisher Surgery.

Cars can be seen among the rubble, while other vehicles teeter over the edge.

A North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said crews have cordoned the area off and are waiting for utility companies and structural engineers to arrive at the scene.

A Craven Council spokesperson, said: "We are aware of an incident off Bridge Street, adjacent to Coach Street car park, where part of a private parking area appears to have collapsed.

"We are closing Coach Street car park while the damage is assessed and we are working with emergency services and North Yorkshire County Council to investigate the incident."
