DOZENS of GCSE students from Keighley took a trip to South Yorkshire for an inspirational insight into the world of science.

A group of 70 year 11 and year 10 pupils from University Academy Keighley (UAK) were taken to Sheffield's City Hall for the GCSE Science Live event last month. (January)

A spokesman for UAK said: "On the day our students heard from five world-renowned scientists, including professor Robert Winston, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocok, professor Alice Roberts, professor Lucie Green and professor Mark Miodownik.

"The scientists gave talks on a diverse range of subjects, such as the potential of designer babies, the Big Bang, time travel and the evolutionary forces that gave the zebra its stripes.

"Stewart Chenery, who is chief examiner at the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance, also gave students some practical advice to help them do well in their exams.

"It was an eye-opening and thought-provoking day, which for some pupils challenged their established thoughts.

"It also showed them the vast diversity of subjects within science – biology, chemistry, physics and maths – that overlap to help explain the multifaceted nature of our world."
