A bus driver has spoken out after vandals targeted buses in Bradford at the weekend.

The driver, who asked to remain anonymous, said his bus was one of six that were attacked on Saturday by yobs throwing bricks and stones.

The man, who works for First Bus, said his bus was targeted at the junction of Mayo Avenue and Manchester Road.

He said: “A brick got put through the window of my bus. There were six buses on Saturday night that had windows put through.

“If I’d had passengers at the back of the bus, it would have seriously hurt someone.

“I am fed up of my colleagues and I being targeted by these people, and then you wonder why some buses don’t turn up.”

A spokeswoman for First Bus in West Yorkshire said the company had reported the incidents to police.

She said: “We can confirm that we have had isolated acts of vandalism that have resulted in damage to some of our vehicles. Thankfully nobody has been hurt and we are now working with the police to review the on board CCTV footage to help identify the individuals involved as these acts could have led to a serious incident.

“We would like to reassure customers that these were isolated incidents and any person with information should contact the police immediately.”

A police spokesman said: “West Yorkshire Police is aware of the recent incidents where buses have been targeted across West Yorkshire.

“We are working together with First West Yorkshire and Metro (West Yorkshire Combined Authority), along with a range of other partners to ensure this is a short lived issue and offenders identified are brought to justice.

“Over the coming weekend officers will be paying particular attention to the bus network across West Yorkshire with a series of multi-agency operations focussed on the areas most affected. We are confident that this will have a positive impact on damage and anti-social behaviour across the network.”

Similar issues have cropped up in Bradford in recent years. In November last year, the Keighley Bus Company’s 845 service had to be re-routed on its route through Wibsey, due to eight instances of people throwing missiles at buses in the village in just two weeks.

Speaking at the time, Councillor Dave Green (Labour, Wibsey) said: “It is criminal behaviour that is totally unacceptable.

“It is potentially dangerous for the driver and for people on the bus. The idiots that are doing it might think it is amusing, but potentially they could kill or seriously injure someone.”
