AN artist who has drawn some of the most recognisable pop culture characters in history for a series of books offered tips and inspiration to Bradford schoolchildren.

Lucasfilm artist and author JAKe appeared at City Library yesterday, sketching characters from the Star Wars series of films for pupils from Rainbow and Lidget Green Primary Schools.

Famous for his books, How to Speak Wookiee and How to Speak Droid, the artist, real name Jake Steel, has worked for the organisation behind the space saga and Indiana Jones for 20 years. He has appeared at numerous literary festivals, and was in Yorkshire as part of the Thought Bubble Festival, a Leeds based comic art festival.

During his session with the pupils he showed them how to use his highly stylised techniques to draw Star Wars characters like Yoda, Kylo Ren and Chewbacca.

While commenting on how Yoda was only short, one Rainbow pupil, Zinedine Meah, 9, shouted out “size matters not.”

JAKe told the children: “My advice is anything you want to do, just do it. If you want to be a dancer just practice dancing every night. if you want to do something, do it every day.

“Do something you really enjoy for your job. You might not always end up a multi millionaire, but if you love doing your job every day then that is even better.”

After his session he told the Telegraph & Argus: “You get kids of all ages coming to these events. I grew up in Hull from a working class background, and if I had someone coming into my school to do something creative like this I would have loved it. Maybe this will be the thing that convinces these children they can do anything as long as they practice.

“I really enjoy drawing Chewbacca. Of the newer character BB8 is really fun to draw. With the old school movies they just got so much right. They just created so many great and unique looking characters.”
