POLICE have arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of causing grevious bodily harm following a baseball bat attack.

Officers were called to a residential street in the district on Friday night.

A statement from West Yorkshire Police read: "Police were called to reports of an assault on Cliffe Lane West, Baildon on Friday just after 9.20pm.

"It is believed that a man in his 20s was assaulted while parked in his BMW car.

"A number of males, who are thought to have been driving a silver vehicle, pulled up next to the BMW, exited their car and began to assault the victim with a baseball bat.

"They also caused damage to the car.

"The victim attempted to drive away from the scene but was in collision with a wall. The suspects then made off from the scene in their vehicle.

"The victim sustained serious injuries in the assault and was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

"A 25-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and has been released pending further investigation.

"Detective Inspector Ria Holmes, of Bradford District CID, said: “We are continuing to investigate this incident and our enquiries are very much ongoing. Officers are continuing to carry out CCTV and house to house enquiries.

“This was a very serious assault on the victim which required urgent medical attention.

“We believe this was a targeted attack on the victim and we have arrested one male in relation to this. Our patrols have been stepped up in the area to reassure the local community.

“Incidents of this nature will not be tolerated by Bradford Police and I would ask for anyone who has any information on this incident to get in touch with police.”

A friend of the injured man who first alerted the Telegrpah & Argus said she had "serious concerns about the way the police were handling the case".

"They are taking too long and haven't even interviewd the key witness, the injured man, yet for a full picture of what happened," she said.

A spokesmnan for the police said they had spoken to the victim today and have requested a full statement when he leaves hospital.
