MORE than £80 million of road improvements are planning in Yorkshire for the rest of this year.

The work, which is in addition to major improvement schemes currently taking place in the county, includes resurfacing more than 207 miles of roads using more than 100,000 tonnes of materials.

Almost 350 kilometres of road markings will be renewed, and ten kilometres of new concrete barriers and more than 16km of steel safety fencing will be replaced.

More than 54km of drainage around the network along with boundary fences will also be renewed.

Mark Ramsden, Highways England service delivery team leader for Yorkshire, said: “This investment will see 89 separate schemes taking place throughout the region and will improve the journeys for the hundreds of thousands of drivers who use our roads every day.

“We are always looking at how we can improve things for our customers and that is why this year we are packaging our work together so that work in one area is carried out at the same time rather than us revisiting the area several times a year to minimise disruption for customers.

"We are also challenging our contractors to be as efficient as possible in planning and delivering the work.”

Drainage and barrier work will start next week on the M62 between Junction 30 at Rothwell and J31 at Normanton, and between J33 at Ferrybridge and J34 for the A19 to Selby.

Bridge maintenance work is also starting tonight at J29 Lofthouse, where the M1 and M62 meet.

Further details of specific schemes will be released closer to the start dates.
