CONTRACTORS have officially started on site today to begin the multi-million pound renovation of the city's historic St George's Hall.
The venue, which dates back to 1851, has been closed since March last year, in what was initially described as a year-long refurbishment.
But delays and escalating costs have meant the renovation work is now expected to cost £8.2 million - a rise of £2.8m.
Work on the Grade II listed building is now expected to be finished towards the end of 2018.
Hoardings began going up around the building last month, as preparatory works began ahead of the contractor Henry Boot officially starting work today.
RELATED STORIES
The work to be carried out includes the restoration of the sandstone exterior of the Lockwood and Mawson-designed building, as well as other improvements both inside and out, to preserve heritage features.
It also involves changes to the front of house both on the ground floor and the first floor.
The project is being funded by the Council, which owns the building, and £1.5m is coming from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Here, the Telegraph & Argus has delved into its archives to find photographs of the building and the many events that have taken place at the venue over the years.
