BRADFORD CITY AA

Despite the recent rain, the rivers are back on their bones. Last weekend was the first of the new river coarse fishing open season but the low flows and hot sun meant that fish were difficult to catch. Our still-waters fared better, however. On the River Swale, only a few chub and jack pike fish have generally come to the net. Yet Mike Buck had a barbel of 7lb 5oz from the bottom of our water at Topcliffe.

Despite carp on our still-waters at Shipton and Oakworth spawning over the past couple of weeks, fish have continued to come to net. At Oakworth, bailiff Michael Whiteoak had a nice carp or two, while Carl Moralee had to vary his bait to tempt several fish to 7lb from the large pond and a net of recently-stocked tench from the small lake.

Shipton Lake has also rewarded anglers, with Dean Ireland managing two nice fish on a guest night session. At Staveley Lakes, anglers are getting almost a 'fish a chuck', with average 30-40lb nets.

We have seen few reports from trout anglers this week but Alex Naylor reported a good fish from the Aire at Kildwick and another bigger one 'released at long range'.

Work parties have also been out on club fisheries over the week. At Shipton, members cut back bushes along the newly-fenced field side and continued work to improve car parking and angling facilities. A team on the upper Wharfe put up new club signs to deter poachers and confirm the limits of our fisheries, with further such work planned on the Ure. At Oakworth, Lee Isaac and Alan Robinson strimmed paths, removed reeds and tidied pegs. We also need help to strim banks on the River Aire. If you can help, call Phil Bailey (07811-286652).

Our next match is the Staveley Championship at Staveley Lakes on Saturday, July 1. To book a place and for information, call Rodney Brooksbank (07875-275749).
