ORGANISERS of a community day in Queensbury are appealing for volunteers to help make the event bigger and better.

The fourth-annual Queensbury 1940s Day will take place on June 17 this year, with a host of entertainment lined up.

It will be on Chapel Street in the village throughout the day, before moving to Queensbury Conservative Club in the evening.

Joan Milner, a member of the event’s organising committee, said volunteers were needed in the run-up to the event and also to contribute ideas.

She added: “The Queensbury Community 1940s Day committee has been working hard planning another day of entertainment for Saturday June 17, 2017.

“Each year we plan to make it better then the preceding year and each year it becomes harder to do so.

“We need new committee members, especially the younger generations, to bring in new ideas, take over some of the tasks, including many physical tasks, not only on the day but days before and after.”

Anyone who thinks they could offer their services to help the event is welcome to go along to a committee meeting. They are held on the second Monday of every month at the George III pub in Chapel Street, Queensbury, starting at 6.30pm and lasting up to one-and-a-half hours.

Mrs Milner said organisers were waiting for confirmation on a flyover like the one that took place at last year’s event, but added: “This year we have afternoon entertainment from Kitty LaMare, Christopher and the Robins, Queensbury Music Centre Band, Revolution Show Band, Queensbury Singers, Queensbury Performing Arts, Holy Trinity Choir, Queensbury History Society, Police Museum, Marshall Waddington’s Fun Fair, and a tea dance in the Conservative Club.

“Our evening entertainment is provided by Kitty LaMare and the Ashby Big Band Tea Dance Band. This should be a fantastic evening in the Conservative Club.”

Tickets for the evening event will be on sale in May at a cost of £10 per person.

The committee is hosting a number of fundraising events in the run up to the 1940s Day, including a Neil Diamond Tribute evening on April 9, from 6pm, at the George III pub.

Then, on Friday June 9, at the same pub, Kitty LaMare will sing a selection of 1940s songs in a taster of what is to come the following week. She will be on from 8.30pm to 11pm.

Mrs Milner said of the 1940s day: “It is a cosy and friendly atmosphere.

“People love the atmosphere. It is very community-minded – it always brings the community together.”
