PUPILS proved pitch perfect when they shared their funding ideas with councillors as part of a school project.

Children from Bingley Grammar School, Saltaire, Crossflatts, Priestthorpe and Eldwick Primary Schools and Beckfoot School made presentations to ten members of Bingley Town Council.

The event was the culmination of 4LC - The Forward Learning Community real-life maths community project where the schools worked with Bingley Town Council on the scheme which saw the youngsters use and apply their maths skills.

The project, which was a tie-up between the six schools, was also designed to improve the pupils’ teamwork and social skills and give them practical experience of using maths.

The pitches included three ideas from year eight pupils, aged 12 and 13, from Bingley Grammar School on replacements to fill the former Bradford & Bingley headquarters site in the town. Their ideas included a cinema and block of flats.

Meanwhile, pupils from Saltaire Primary School pitched in with another alternative for the same site, at the event held at Bingley Little Theatre yesterday,

They proposed to convert the site into a community garden and even worked out the costings and contacts at Bradford Council they would need to help them complete their project.

Mei Howard, maths teacher at Bingley Grammar School, praised the work of her pupils who took part in the project.

She said: “I’m really proud of the children.

“They are a fantastic group and worked hard on the project.”

Chris O’Neill, a member of Bingley Town Council, said he was impressed by the work of the pupils and said they would consider them in future funding discussions the authority has.

He said: “The children were really excited to be taking part.

“They told me they did not think they would be standing in front of real councillors to do their presentations.

“We got a chance to look at their ideas and comment on them and see if we could fit them in.

“We will take a look at their ideas and accommodate them, if possible.”
