A 43-YEAR-OLD man who was attacked and died in Gomersal on Friday has been named locally as Dave Butterfield.

He was also known as Dave Butts to many of his family and friends.

Police conducting a murder investigation were this morning dredging drains in Spen Lane.

Neighbours said they had also been searching undergrowth, looking for a weapon.

Officers were called to an address in Shirley Terrace shortly after 6.30pm on Friday.

Police said yesterday that they found a 43-year-old man who had been attacked.

“The man was treated by paramedics but was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said a spokesman.

According to neighbours, the semi-detached house belongs to the victim's girlfriend, hairdresser Michelle Spencer.

Detectives are appealing to anyone who was in the area around Shirley Terrace around 6.30pm on Friday who may have any information to come forward, by calling the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team via 101. 

A 47-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of murder remains in police custody. 

Leeds magistrates' court today granted the police a further 36 hours to question her.

A 26-year-old man, who had also been arrested, has since been released on bail.

Shirley Terrace remains cordoned off in its entirety today, as does a nearby ginnel leading to Butts Hill.

One resident of nearby Shirley Road said yesterday he had been shocked to hear a murder investigation was under way.

He said: “On your doorstep, you don’t like it.”

Another man living in Shirley Parade said he had seen the emergency services begin to arrive shortly after 6.30pm on Friday, when he left to pick up a takeaway. He said when he came back, at around 7.30pm to 8pm, the place was swarming with police vehicles.

Detective Superintendent Mark Ridley, of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: "Our investigation is continuing into the death of a man in Gomersal.

"Anyone who has any information about this incident is asked to come forward and speak to the police via 101."
