Children at a Bradford school are in Captain Planet's good books.

Pupils at Springwood Primary School in Manningham spent five days learning about the environment with Bradford Council.

Youngsters carried out a visual audit of the area around the school - recording cases of fly-tipping, litter, graffiti, dog muck and vandalism and found out more about how Bradford Council cleans nearby streets.

They also discovered more about recycling by turning everyday rubbish into a series of unique models, took part in a litter pick on the school grounds and designed posters to spread the word about the importance of caring for the planet.

Richard Wixey, Bradford Council's strategic director of environment and neighbourhoods, visited the school to present prizes to pupils for their efforts.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, Bradford Council's executive member for environment and culture, said: "I am sure that the children will learn some valuable lessons this week about the importance of not dropping litter, recycling and keeping their neighbourhoods clean and tidy.

"They can then go out and spread the word in their community."
